Find your position among global windsurfing speed junkies!
Article by Stephen Pritchett
GPS Speed recording is a great way to get more fun out of the
standard
old blasting around, particularly if you are a "techie". The
equipment
is pretty cheap, the software is free, and the people who run
GPS-Speedsurfing.com are very helpful and proud of their site. They are
Dutch, but have great English skills, and they are very interested in
worldwide exposure. The Regional Time Keeper is an expate Aussie who
lives out in the Gorge and used to be a "professional" speed sailor.
He
is running a US event which will start April 1.
The link for this contest is http://www.gps-speedsailing.com/
There is also the Lake Okabena, Worthignton, MN event which will have
$1000 dollars in prize money. It runs for 6 months.
You must have a gps which allows for recording and downloading
tracklogs
to your computer. I recommend the Garmin Foretrex 201, the Garmin Geko,
or the Garmin Etrex. The Freeware for downloading tracklogs to your
computer is G7toWin, available at http://www.gpsinformation.org/ronh/,
and the freeware for analyzing your tracks is GPSActionReplay, available
at http://users.info.unicaen.fr/~mathet/gpsar/.
You can compete against
speedsailors all over the world, at the time and place of your choice!

I just hit a software analyzed 2 sec of 31.7 kts down at Rickenbacker Causeway in Miami, but that hasn't been verified yet by the regional timekeeper. I think Frisco/Hatteras is probably good for 35 kts with the equipment I have now.
